Root Cellar
A root cellar
is an important part of any country wife’s storage and should
be considered at the earliest opportunity. This will make a good
temporary root cellar for the beginning homestead. Dig a hole. Make
it deep enough for a wooden barrel to sit in completely. Line the
hole with straw as an insulator. Store root vegetables, squashes,
hard fruits such as apples and the like. Cover the barrel with a
lid and then add more straw, then dirt. Mark it well so you may
find it when snow flies. |
